Knowing About God vs. Knowing God
Moving Beyond Religion Into Relationship
Theme Scripture: John 17:3 (NIV)
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Lesson Purpose
To understand the difference between knowing information about God and developing a personal, growing relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. This lesson encourages us to examine our spiritual lives, recognize God’s character, and intentionally pursue a deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father.
1. Knowing About God Is Not the Same as Knowing God
Scripture: John 17:3
Knowing about God involves learning about His existence, His works, His promises, and His Word.
Knowing God involves a personal relationship with Him through Jesus Christ, characterized by faith, trust, love, obedience, and ongoing spiritual growth.
We can attend church, memorize Scripture, participate in ministry, and know religious traditions without necessarily cultivating a close relationship with God.
Key Truth: Biblical knowledge is valuable, but its purpose is to lead us into a deeper knowledge of God and a transformed life.
Questions for Reflection:
- What is the difference between knowing facts about God and knowing Him personally?
- When did your understanding of God begin to become a personal relationship?
- Are there areas where you have become more familiar with religious routines than with spending time in God’s presence?
2. Religion vs. Relationship
Scriptures: Matthew 7:21–23; Luke 10:38–42
Religious activities can be meaningful expressions of faith, but they should never replace a genuine relationship with God.
In Matthew 7, Jesus warns that outward religious activity alone does not establish that someone truly belongs to Him.
In Luke 10, Martha became distracted by her responsibilities while Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen.
Jesus reminds us that our relationship with Him must remain our priority, even while we fulfill important responsibilities.
Key Truth: Our service to God should flow from our relationship with Him, not become a substitute for it.
Questions for Reflection:
- Can we become so busy doing things for God that we neglect spending time with Him?
- What can we learn from Mary and Martha about spiritual priorities?
- How can we maintain a healthy balance between serving God and spending personal time with Him?
3. Knowing God’s Character Builds Trust
Scriptures: Jeremiah 9:23–24; Exodus 34:6–7
God desires that we understand and know Him.
His Word reveals His character: He is compassionate, gracious, patient, faithful, loving, just, and righteous.
As we grow in our understanding of who God is, our ability to trust Him deepens, even when we do not understand our circumstances.
Knowing God’s character helps us move beyond depending solely on what He does for us and toward loving Him for who He is.
Key Truth: When we know God’s character, we can trust His heart even when we cannot understand His ways.
Questions for Reflection:
- Which characteristic of God have you experienced most personally?
- How have difficult seasons helped you develop a deeper understanding of God?
- Is it possible to trust God’s character even when His answer to our prayers is different from what we hoped?
4. Developing Intimacy With God
Scriptures: James 4:8; Psalm 46:10; John 15:4–5
A growing relationship with God requires intentional spiritual practices.
We develop spiritual intimacy through:
- Prayer: Communicating honestly with God and bringing our hearts before Him.
- Studying Scripture: Learning His truth, character, promises, and instructions.
- Worship: Honoring God for who He is, not only for what He provides.
- Obedience: Applying His Word to our everyday decisions.
- Stillness: Creating space to reflect on His Word without distractions.
- Abiding in Christ: Remaining dependent upon Him and allowing His truth to shape our lives.
Key Truth: Intimacy with God grows as we consistently seek Him, trust Him, and respond to His Word.
Questions for Reflection:
- What distractions sometimes interfere with your personal time with God?
- Do you seek God only when you need something, or do you intentionally spend time with Him?
- What spiritual practice would help you develop a deeper relationship with Him?
5. The Greatest Desire: To Know Christ
Scripture: Philippians 3:7–10
The apostle Paul had extensive religious knowledge, accomplishments, and credentials.
Yet he recognized that knowing Jesus Christ was more valuable than anything he had achieved.
Paul desired not only to know about Christ but to experience a deeper relationship with Him, including the power of His resurrection and fellowship in His sufferings.
His example teaches us that spiritual maturity is not measured simply by how much we know, but by how our relationship with Christ transforms our priorities, character, and daily lives.
Key Truth: The goal of our Christian walk is not merely greater religious knowledge, but a growing relationship with Jesus Christ that transforms how we live.
Questions for Reflection:
- What does Paul’s desire to know Christ teach us about spiritual priorities?
- How can we recognize spiritual growth in our daily lives?
- What would it look like for knowing Christ to become our greatest priority?
Personal Heart Check
Take a few moments to examine your relationship with God.
- I intentionally spend time with God beyond attending church.
- I seek to understand God’s character through His Word.
- I communicate honestly with God through prayer.
- I am learning to trust God even when I do not understand His plans.
- I allow Scripture to influence my decisions and actions.
- I desire a deeper relationship with Christ, not simply more religious knowledge.
Personal Reflection:
What is one area of your relationship with God that you desire to strengthen?
What is one intentional step you can take this week to draw closer to Him?

Knowing about God informs us. Knowing God transforms us.
