“Start children off on the way they should go…” Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
One of the greatest responsibilities God gives a mother is not simply raising a son; it is training his heart.
A mother can teach her son to say “please” and “thank you,” to clean his room, and to make good grades. While these are all important, God calls us to something even greater. He calls us to help shape our son’s heart so that it is tender toward Him.
A son’s character is formed long before he reaches adulthood. The early years provide an incredible opportunity to plant seeds of faith that can influence him for the rest of his life.
The Heart Is the Foundation
The Bible teaches that everything we do flows from our heart.
When we train a son’s heart, we are helping him develop the inner character that guides his decisions, relationships, and faith. A heart that loves God will naturally begin to produce actions that honor Him.
Introduce Him to Jesus Early
One of the core messages of Mom of Sons™ is this:
It is never too early, or too late, for a mother to introduce her son to God’s Son.
Begin while he is young. Read Bible stories together. Pray with him before bedtime. Sing songs about Jesus. Talk about God’s goodness throughout the day.
Help him understand that Jesus is not simply someone we learn about on Sundays; He desires a relationship with us every day.
1. Starting with the Heart
It’s easy to get caught up in managing outward behavior: stopping him from throwing toys, or keeping him quiet during service. While good manners are important, God looks much deeper.
If we only correct outward actions without addressing what’s happening in his heart, we risk raising boys who know how to follow rules, but don’t know how to love righteousness. When your son makes a mistake, invite him to look inward:
- Instead of just: “Don’t hit your brother,” try asking: “Why did you hit your brother?
- Teach him that anger, jealousy, and fear are normal, but how we choose to respond to those feelings matters.
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
When we teach our boys early to guard their hearts, we give them a compass that will guide them for the rest of their lives.
2. Anchor His Identity in God’s Word
From a very young age, the world will try to label your son. Culture will attempt to tell him what it means to be a boy, what success looks like, and where his worth comes from. If we don’t define his identity early, the world will gladly do it for him.
Fill his environment with the truth of scripture. Speak life over him while he is small so that God’s voice becomes the inner voice he hears as he grows.
- Speak scriptures over him at bedtime.
- Remind him daily: “You are loved, you are chosen, and God created you with a special purpose.”
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
Spiritual training isn’t just a Sunday routine; it’s built into the natural rhythm of everyday life.
3. Teach Him the Strength of Repentance and Forgiveness
One of the greatest gifts you can give your son is teaching him how to take responsibility when he falls short. Society often equates true strength with never admitting fault or backing down. But in God’s Kingdom, humility and repentance are marks of true courage.
When he makes a mistake:
- Guide him through asking for forgiveness, not just saying a quick “sorry,” but genuinely seeking reconciliation.
- Show him the power of God’s grace by forgiving him completely, letting him know that your love for him isn’t tied to his performance.
And just as importantly, let him see you apologize when you make a mistake. When a mother admits her own faults, she models humility, honesty, and grace in action.
Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
4. Train His Hands to Serve
Boys are built for action, and that energy is a God-given gift! From early childhood, we can channel their natural drive into acts of service and kindness.
Give him age-appropriate responsibilities early on. Teach him to help around the house, carry items for others, and look out for younger siblings. When a young boy realizes that his strength is meant to serve and protect others, rather than just serve himself, his heart transforms.
Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
