A Mother’s Heart in an Uncertain World
“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

There are some things that only a mother truly understands. One of them is watching your son walk out the door.
Even though my sons are grown, that feeling has never left me. When the youngest walks out the door for work, to spend time with friends, or to go back to college, I whisper a prayer.
When the oldest is traveling throughout different cities for his real estate business, I pray over him.
As mothers, our sons may grow older, taller, and more independent, but they never outgrow our prayers. We never stop asking God to surround them with His protection, guide their decisions, and bring them safely home.
A Mother’s Heart
As a Black mother who has raised Black sons, there are moments when my heart carries an extra layer of worry and concern.
I want both of my sons to be known for their character, treated with dignity, and welcomed with respect wherever they go. More than anything, I want them both to arrive home safely.
Recently, heartbreaking stories in the news involving young black people whose lives ended tragically have weighed heavily on my heart and mind. They remind me that life is precious, that tomorrow is never promised, and that every moment with our children is a gift from God.
While I don’t know all the details surrounding these tragedies, I know that it is happening way too much to our Young Black Adults. I know it has caused many parents, including me, to pause, seek answers, and pray.
Rather than allowing fear to take root in my heart, these incidents have driven me to my knees.
We Cannot Parent From Fear
If I’m honest, there are days when worry tries to creep into my heart. Will they both be safe? Will they make wise decisions? Will the people around them value their lives? Will they always remember who they are in Christ? Those thoughts are real. But God has gently reminded me that while concern is natural, fear is not meant to lead my life.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

As mothers, we cannot allow fear to become the loudest voice in our hearts. Instead, we must choose faith.
We choose prayer. We choose to trust the God who loves our sons even more than we do.
Raising Sons With Faith and Wisdom
Trusting God does not mean ignoring reality. It means preparing our sons with both faith and wisdom. We teach them to love Jesus. We teach them to treat every person with respect. We teach them to make wise choices. We teach them to be aware of their surroundings. We teach them to seek God’s direction before making important decisions. We teach them that courage and wisdom walk hand in hand.
Then, after we have done everything we know to do, we place them into the hands of our faithful Heavenly Father.

Our Sons Never Outgrow Our Prayers
One of the greatest lessons motherhood has taught me is this: Our sons may outgrow our hand to hold, but they never outgrow our prayers. Whether they are five years old or forty years old… Whether they are sleeping in the next room or living in another city… Whether they are just beginning kindergarten or building careers and raising families…
A mother’s prayers never stop. Prayer is not our last resort. It is one of our greatest weapons. There are places we cannot go. Conversations we cannot hear. Decisions we cannot make for them. But there is never a moment when our prayers cannot reach them.

Trust the God Who Watches Over Our Sons
Motherhood continually reminds me of one beautiful truth: My sons belonged to God first.
He knew Brandon before I held him. He knew Jaeden before I ever whispered his name. He has been faithful every step of their journey, and He will continue to watch over them long after I am gone. That truth doesn’t erase every concern, but it gives me peace. So today, if you’re carrying the weight of worrying about your son, I want to encourage you:
Pray. Teach him God’s Word. Speak life over him. Prepare him with wisdom. And trust the One who watches over his coming and going.

A Prayer for Moms
Heavenly Father,
Today I place Brandon and Jaeden into Your loving hands. Thank You for the men they have become and for the purpose You have placed on their lives. Watch over them wherever they go. Send Your angels to surround them… be a firewall of protection around them. Give them wisdom, discernment, favor, and courage. Guide every decision they make, and bring them safely home every time they walk out the door.
Father, I also lift up every son represented by the mothers reading this today. Whether their son is five, fifteen, or forty-five, remind us that You love our sons even more than we do. Help us replace fear with faith, worry with prayer, and anxiety with confidence.
Help us to continue speaking life over our sons, teaching them Your Word, and trusting You with every step they take.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
