Legacy in Motion

Today was a very special day, one I will carry in my heart for years to come. My oldest son, Brandon, was ordained as a minister.

As I sat and watched him step into this new season of ministry, I found myself overwhelmed with gratitude. I thought about the little boy he once was, the prayers I prayed over him, the lessons learned along the way, and the faithfulness of God through every season of motherhood.

But alongside the joy, there was a little bit of sadness. My mother was heavy on my mind all week leading up to today.

I found myself wishing she could have been here to witness this moment. I wanted her to see the fruition of so many prayers she prayed, so many conversations she had with God on behalf of her family, and the legacy of faith she helped establish.

There were moments today when I could almost hear her voice. I thought about how proud she would have been.

I thought about how she would have smiled watching Brandon stand before family, friends, and fellow believers, answering God’s call upon his life.

While my mother was not physically present, I realized something powerful:

Her legacy was.

Legacy is more than being present for the harvest. Sometimes legacy is planting seeds you may never personally see bloom. It is faithfully praying when no one is watching. It is teaching God’s Word around kitchen tables. It is modeling faith during difficult seasons. It is trusting God with future generations.

Today, I witnessed legacy in motion.

I was blessed to have my Aunt Bernice there. I spent time this weekend with Jaeden, my youngest son, Abiah, and little Junie, my grandchildren, celebrating Junie’s 4th birthday. As I looked around at the generations represented today, I was reminded that God works through family lines. His faithfulness stretches beyond a single lifetime.

As mothers, we often wonder if our prayers matter. We wonder if our words are taking root. We wonder if the seeds we plant will ever bear fruit.

Today, God reminded me that they do.

Watching Brandon be ordained was not simply about one moment. It was about generations. It was about a grandmother’s prayers, a mother’s prayers, and now a son who is stepping forward to serve God and impact others.

Legacy is not measured by what we leave behind. Legacy is measured by what lives on. Today, I saw a living legacy.

I saw God’s faithfulness. I saw answered prayers. I saw the beauty of a son walking in his purpose.

And I silently thanked my mom.

Because part of her lives on in every prayer spoken, every lesson remembered, and every step of faith taken by the generations that follow.

Mom, your prayers are still speaking.

And today, we heard and saw them.

“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4 (NIV)
