Good evening, Moms,

I wanted to take a moment to come on the blog and share something very personal to me: a prayer I pray over my own son as he navigates his college journey.

For those of you who have a son or daughter in college, you understand that this season comes with both pride and prayer. We are proud to watch them grow, pursue their dreams, and become more independent, but we also recognize that there are places they will go, decisions they will make, and situations they will encounter where we cannot be there.

But God can. As their independence grows, our covering as mothers does not stop; it deepens. So today, I want to share this prayer with every mother who has sent, or is preparing to send, a son or daughter to college. Where you see (student’s name), insert the name of your son or daughter and make this prayer personal.

A Mother’s Prayer for Her College Student

Heavenly Father,

Instruct (student’s name) and teach them in the way they should go. Counsel them, Lord, and keep Your loving eye upon them.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8 (NIV)

Father, do not let (student’s name) worry about anyone looking down on them because they are young. Instead, may they set an example for other believers in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.

1 Timothy 4:12

Bless (student’s name) with friends who will sharpen them as iron sharpens iron. Surround them with friendships that encourage growth, wisdom, accountability, and faith.

Proverbs 27:17

Provide (student’s name) with a church, campus ministry, or fellowship group where they can remain connected to other believers and encourage others toward love and good deeds.

Hebrews 10:24–25

Help (student’s name) understand the importance of choosing relationships wisely. Remind them that walking with the wise leads to wisdom, while the wrong company can lead them away from the path You have for them.

Proverbs 13:20

When (student’s name) feels lonely, homesick, overlooked, or rejected, remind them that You understand and that You will never abandon them. Let Your presence become especially real during the moments when home feels far away.

Isaiah 53:3; Psalm 94:14

May (student’s name) walk in Your light and enjoy genuine fellowship with other believers.

1 John 1:7

Father, surround (student’s name) with Your hedge of protection wherever their feet tread. Protect their coming and going, their dorm or apartment, their vehicle, their classroom, and every place they enter.

Job 1:10

Abba, grant (student’s name) Your grace. Give them grace in their relationships. Grace to overcome failures. Grace to make wise decisions. Grace to stand firm when temptation comes. And when they make mistakes, give them the grace and humility to get back on track and turn toward You.

2 Peter 1:2

Bless (student’s name) to be bold in their faith and love for You. May they stand firm and never be ashamed of the Gospel. Teach them to continually look to You for direction, wisdom, courage, and strength.

Romans 1:16

Father, protect (student’s name) while attending (college/university name). Protect them from the schemes of the enemy and from the temptations that can come with college life. Protect them from drugs, excessive drinking, destructive partying, unhealthy relationships, wrong influences, dangerous situations, and decisions that could negatively affect their future.

Give them discernment to recognize when something or someone is not good for them and the courage to walk away. Father, keep (student’s name) close to You. Remind them that their relationship with You is priceless.

Bless them to be a good student. Give them discipline to attend class, complete assignments, study, ask for help when needed, manage their time wisely, and remain focused on why they are there: to learn, grow, prepare for their future, and earn their degree.

Help them remain level-headed, focused, and balanced.

1 Peter 5:8–10

Bless (student’s name) with overflowing joy.

Let them experience joy in serving You, joy in learning, joy in healthy friendships, and joy in discovering the work and purpose You have prepared for their life.

Father, bless their life so that it overflows with joy.

Psalm 126:3

Bless (student’s name) to always have hope in You.

Fill them with peace and joy as they trust You. When they feel overwhelmed, uncertain, stressed, or afraid, remind them where their help comes from.

Teach them to look to You, the Author and Finisher of their faith.

Romans 15:13; Hebrews 12:2; Psalm 121:1–2

Father, order (student’s name)’s steps and surround them with Your favor.

Give them favor with professors, advisors, college staff, employers, classmates, roommates, and everyone they encounter.

Open the right doors. Close the wrong ones. Place the right people in their path. Give them wisdom for every decision. Protect their mind, body, heart, and spirit. And Father, when I cannot be there, remind me that You are. When I don’t know what they are doing, You do. When I cannot see what is happening around them, You can. When I cannot protect them with my own hands, help me remember that I can place them into Yours.

Lord, I release (student’s name) into Your loving care, trusting that You are guiding, covering, protecting, correcting, strengthening, and leading them toward the purpose You have for their life.

Thank You for allowing me the privilege of being their mother. And thank You for loving my child even more than I do.
